KHOR’s Consultative Roundtable Conference on “FATA Political Reforms: Defining Tribal Women Political Role in the FATA

Khor, women organization, believed that the government needs to unveil a reform agenda to mainstream the marginalized area by introducing political, judicial and administrative reforms. As a first step, the government passed a bill on the extension of higher judiciary to FATA to give its people an easy access to justice. This development, has opened up the door for many more reforms down the road.

In the wake of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s announcement on the floor of the National Assembly regarding mainstreaming FATA, the debate on the stalled FATA reforms has once again got momentum in the national discourse.

Khor understands that to restore people’s confidence on state institutions, the government need to ensure giving the marginalized people of FATA a say in the decision making process through enhanced political participation. This will not only give the people a sense of ownership to the system, which they

are part of, but address the sense of frustrations and deprivations they have developed over the years.

Women constitute half of the total population but their participation in the political process in the conservative tribal belt is almost equal to none.

Thus, the seminar brought together  a select group of women activists, parliamentarians, scholars and opinion makers together to

deliberate upon the greater political participation of the women in the upcoming general elections followed by the local bodies elections sometime later this year.

The seminar with experts focused on the following issues in its deliberations and suggested recommendations;

• Ensuring greater participation of women in the political process and providing them due say in the decision making processes.

• Representation of the people of FATA and specially women in the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

• Women participation in the local government election.

It was attended by the civil society, politicians, academicians, media persons, and students.
