“Women’s Electoral Participation in District Bajaur” Faraz Ali Mphil Dissertation

There is less or no research work being done on the tribal women of Newly Merged Tribal Districts, therefore this research “Women’s Electoral Participation in District Bajaur”by Faraz Ali and supervised by Dr. Noreen Naseer is an effort to explore the tribal women’s issues. The research is carried out to study the conditions, which made possible increased women electoral participation in the 2013 elections of Bajaur, erstwhile FATA despite its conservative societal structure. The study is both qualitative and quantitative in nature, hence based on both primary and secondary data. The primary data is collected from randomly selected respondents through interviews, while the secondary data is collected from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and internet websites. The work gives brief overview to the topic, thus comprises statement of problem, objectives of the study, research question and methodology. The study is conducted under the theoretical framework of feudalism and patriarchy as it enables to view the situation in prevailing Bajaur’s structures and context. It also discusses social structure and cultural environment of tribal societies in general and Bajaur in particular. The inquiry on research is interview based, and hence it analyses the available data of interviews, literature and reports by credible sources. It gives the findings that it was not the political empowerment of women but feudal and patriarchal structures that played its role and enabled women to vote in the 2013 elections.
